Trees, Forests and Earth

Trees are one of Thompson’s primary themes since 1988, when she began visiting old growth forests in the Pacific Northwest United States and British Columbia.

“Trees teach me about relationships in nature. Every tree is an individual being that has it’s own experience of its environment. The forest is a community of individuals that communicate with each other. I believe that all of nature has an inner luminosity, and that it is sentient. I believe in the rights of nature. I paint from these points of view.

As in the forest, the branching patterns in the paintings unfold in response to their location on the canvas, taking whatever direction I choose for the painting design. Rather than a literal interpretation of what I see, it is an emotional response to my view of an interconnected world.”
